Choosing your baby's name is exciting, but it's also a lifelong decision. Knowing the most common mistakes helps you avoid them and decide with more peace of mind. These are the slip-ups that come up most often and how to sidestep them.

1. Choosing by fashion alone

A very trendy name can mean your child shares it with three other classmates. Trends pass; the name stays. Use them as inspiration, but choose something you truly love, not just because it's popular right now.

2. Overly complicated spellings

Changing a name's spelling to make it "unique" (with extra letters or odd twists) usually condemns your child to spelling it out for life. If you want originality, better to choose an uncommon name with a natural spelling. We have plenty in uncommon names.

3. Not saying it with the surname

A name can sound beautiful on its own but odd next to the surname. Always say the full name out loud before deciding. We help you with this in how to match a first name with the surnames.

4. Ignoring the meaning

The meaning stays with your child for life and is the first thing people will ask about their name. Choosing without knowing the meaning means missing the most beautiful part. Always check what it means and where it comes from.

5. Not thinking about the future (or nicknames)

A sweet name for a baby should also work for a teenager and a working adult. Picture the name at different stages of life. And think about the nicknames it could produce: almost every name generates one.

The best advice: take your time

There's no rush. Make a list, let the names rest for a few days, say them out loud, and notice which one still excites you. The right name is the one that, after some thought, still makes you smile. Explore all the options on Astra.
